Traveling to Holland, Michigan?
Our family loves the beauty of this quaint lakeshore town. We have a large family with varied ages so it can be a challenge to find something to please everyone. We’ve all been there – each child has a vision of the perfect day and what they want to do. Holland has a little bit for everyone, and within each location, options to participate or just walk through and enjoy the amazing scenery. On top of these amazing places to visit, there are often local shopping events and local sales sure to intrigue even the most fussy traveler.
Numerous restaurants with short wait times are just a walk away to keep your brood well fed and happy. If you are traveling on a budget (and who isn’t these days?) make sure to check out any reciprocal programs with your home city’s museums and
places of interest.
- Visit the DeZwaan windmill: The DeZwaan windmill is a fully functioning, authentic Dutch windmill that was imported from the Netherlands in the 1960s. It is a symbol of Holland’s Dutch heritage and is open to the public for tours. Visitors can go inside and see the milling equipment in action, as well as learn about the history of windmills and their role in the local community. This is a great place to research for school papers or projects on heritage. The staff are very friendly and willing to go into as much or as little depth as you request.
- Take a stroll through the Holland State Park: Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Holland State Park is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It features a sandy beach, a playground, and several hiking and biking trails that wind through the park. There are also picnic areas and a fishing pier, making it a great place to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. Please be careful in the waters of Lake Michigan, pay attention to any flag warnings and most importantly speak with some locals if you have any concerns about the water conditions.
- Check out the Tulip Time Festival: The Tulip Time Festival is an annual event that celebrates Holland’s Dutch heritage and is held in May. It features parades, carnivals, and live music, as well as beautiful tulip displays throughout the city. It’s a great opportunity to experience Dutch culture and traditions firsthand. Don’t be worried about the weather during Tulip Time! Even on a rainy day the displays of Tulips are inspiring. Having traveled to the Netherlands myself, I can promise you this is just as impressive a display. Rain or shine this is a must see venue!
- Visit the Dutch Village: The Dutch Village is a themed attraction that brings a piece of Holland’s past to life. It features authentic Dutch architecture, costumed actors, and a working windmill, as well as a variety of shops and restaurants. Visitors can learn about Dutch culture and history, watch traditional craft demonstrations, and try some Dutch specialties. Holland Michigan is rich with Dutch anscestors and those willing to chat with you about the culture are the true gem in the Dutch Village.
- Explore the Kollen Park Boardwalk: The Kollen Park Boardwalk is a scenic trail that takes you through a beautiful marshland and offers great views of Lake Michigan. It’s a great place to go for a leisurely walk or bike ride, and there are several benches along the way where you can sit and take in the views. Rest assured this is a crowed pleaser for all ages and fitness levels. Take your time and enjoy all of the views, wildlife and atmosphere.
- Sample some craft beer: Holland is home to several local breweries, including New Holland Brewing Company and Our Brewing Company, where you can try a variety of delicious craft beers. These breweries often offer tours, tastings, and events, so you can learn about the brewing process and try some unique beers.
- Go shopping at the Holland Farmers Market: The Holland Farmers Market is held on Saturdays from May to October and features a variety of local produce, baked goods, and handmade crafts. It’s a great place to find unique gifts and try some local specialties, and it’s also a great opportunity to support the local community. Chatting up the local farmers is a great way to get more information on the surrounding areas as well. Holland is just a stone’s throw from several other small towns that adorn the Lake Michigan shoreline.
